StarCraft II

South Korea has declared 27 July 2010 (StarCraft2 release date) a national holiday.

DH said that it's written in his prophecy book that TODAY he'll get StarCraft II.

On 28 July, the shop said it has plenty of them. Today, at 12 pm the shop was out of stock, but will replenish again at 5 pm. DH is still stuck in a meeting... but his friend already flocked to the shop for the game.

Will DH get it today? Suspense... we have a few hours left before the shop closes today.

Windows 7 does not recognise USB [solved]

I inserted my USB in my PC that is running on Windows 7, but couldn't access it. A window pops up and says: "H: is not accessible. Access is denied."

For hours, I tried to Google for answers... but no forum is helpful AT ALL, until I came to this video tutorial from VvCompHelpvV. It's clear and easy to follow, thank goodness for this!

A summary of how to make your flash drive accessible:
  • From the start menu, right click on Computer (yes, right click)
  • Then select Manage
  • You'll see your USB, right click it and select "change drive letter and paths" (**if you can't see your USB, select "disk management" under "storage" on the left pane**)
  • Then change the letter to another letter. Say your initial letter was H, so change it to I for example.
  • Click yes.
Yoohoo, it's solved!

Update 2011: an easier and lazy way to solve this issue, if your laptop has more than 1 USB port, would be to remove your USB and plug it in a different port.

Windows 7 and Microsoft Officer Starter 2010

Microsoft Windows 7 is an operating system, and doesn't come with a Microsoft Office (doh!). However, the laptop was preloaded with Microsoft Office Starter 2010, which offers limited functionality of the Word and Excel version... with advertisements at the lower right corner.

I tried to use it and got a message: "Microsoft Word Starter cannot be opened. Try again or repair product in control panel". How do I repair it on control panel? I Googled for the answer, and followed the instructions (social.answers.microsoft.com):
  • Click on Start menu
  • Click on Control panel
  • Click on Programs item and select Uninstall item
  • Select Microsoft Office 2010
  • Click on Change
  • When a window pops, click on Repair
So far so good. I opened it again, and a window pops out: "Downloading Microsoft Word Starter 2010 (99%)". I waited for ages (more than 1 hour), even though it's 99% complete, so decided to cancel it. I restarted the computer, and it seemed to be working for a while, until I installed recommended updates from MS. Now the problem is back! I tried to repair it numerous time, but it still couldn't work... I'm getting the same old message to repair it.

During this waiting in agony time, I came upon this site called openoffice.org (sponsored by Oracle). You can download this open-source office software suite for FREE for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, and more. I gave it a try. I've downloaded the latest version OpenOffice3.0, and started to use it.

What happened to the MS Word and Excel? Forget about them (too frustrating)!!! I'll miss the insert cover page though :(

Bread - part 2

I gave it another go, this time without the Parmesan cheese and oregano. I wish it could be fluffier. On my next try, I'll let the dough rise longer during the final rise.

Happier with Less

Today, I'm celebrating a "living happy with less" mode. I've sold most (not all) of the products I've posted on a free online classified advertisement site. There are several more things to let go, but I'm glad it worked so far! My eyes felt liberated from the cluttering in the apartment (yeah, there were a few clutters here and there).

It made me realize that I didn't really need that much to be happy, only good quality products that are necessary :) My new code of living (although you are free to disagree):

  • spend on what is necessary for a happy and healthy lifestyle
  • sell or donate what I don't need
  • maintain what I already have
  • stop impulse buying
  • spend on good quality products only, which is usually pricey (but hey, that's worth it!)
  • spend on hobbies that I can afford and that can make me happy

Remarks on products that can be sold (surprisingly):
  • screen monitor
  • amplifier
  • branded name bags
  • unique vases

What is difficult to sell: IT books... although they are still up-to-date :(

I'll be posting more products on that site, and hope that I can sell them as well (cross fingers).

Lemon obsession

I have this obsession with baking. When I aim for a particular flavor, I'd try different recipes until I get to the best one. The most recent flavor obsession was lemon cake.

The first recipe was too dry and had a bitter taste to it, the second recipe was too sour and dense, although it tasted exactly like a lemon cheesecake (not kidding!) just without the cream cheese (see below picture).

Gladly, the third recipe was moist and fluffy and tasted like a real lemon cake.

Now... for the perfect frosting... something not too sweet.

Fasio Eyebrow Pencil

I recently tried an eyebrow pencil from Fasio, a brand from Kose Corporation in Japan. It comes in two colors: either brown or gray. If you previously used Shu Uemera eyebrow pencil "Hard Formula 9" or Empro "e5 Natural Gray", then I'd recommend the color "Gray 002" with Fasio. The main features are:
  • water resistant and long-lasting
  • contains rosemary extract to keep your eyebrows moist and prevent irritation and dryness
The pencil lead is soft and its texture is darker than Shu's and Empro's counterparts, so you'd only need to apply it very lightly to get the intensity you need for your eyebrows.

Below is the comparison between the three brands (from most to least expensive), my favorite so far is Empro:

Shu Uemera: lead is dry and hard, lead shape is triangular
Empro: gives a natural color eyebrow, lead shape is retractable triangular, no need to sharpen
Fasio: lead is soft, and color is darker, lead shape is round

dr. feelgood's Lipscription

I've missed out on an effective product in my list of cosmetics reviews: dr. feelgood's Lipscription from Benefit. My lips love them! Bye bye dry and flaky lips. They used to bother me a lot until my friend recommended me to this duo a few year ago:

Buffing Lip Beads & Silky Lip Balm.

Bread

Hurray for my bread. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. In this second version, I added oregano powder and Parmesan cheese. I'll stick to the plain version next time, nothing beats hot bread fresh from the oven.

Noodles

The first time I cooked these Chinese noodles (Western equivalent to the hybrid of Linguine and Spaghetti), I dumped it all into a pot of boiling water. Boooo, they clumped and were eventually struck off from the menu for that day.

Yeah, I had to spread the noodles before adding them to boiling water. When they're almost cooked, drain and then stir fry with ginger, garlic, leafy vegetables, chicken. Add a bit of oyster sauce and soy sauce, and the result is yummy!

Kick-Ass (2010)

Kick-Ass (2010)... one word: watch it! This movie is beyond my expectations, it's hilarious... and gory. Nicholas Cage is in it, and my favorite character is... Hit-Girl!

Remarks: although there are lots of young characters in this movie, it's definitely NOT for kids!

100% Chance of Earthquake

I remember learning it in geography class a while back... that there are earthquakes happening everyday (gladly minors ones). Refer to this link to the latest earthquakes in the world: earthquake.usgs.gov, the significant earthquakes are highlighted in red.
